What is chemsex?
Chemsex describes sex under the influence of chemical substances – so-called “Chems”. Although there is no uniform definition, chemsex primarily refers to the use of GHB/GBL, crystal meth, mephedrone, and ketamine.
Internationally, there is no uniform, comprehensive definition of the term “chemsex”. In common usage, however, it is often understood to mean the consumption of very specific substances by men who have sex with men. In this context, the term was coined years ago in London’s gay scene.
Undoubtedly, substance use in a sexual context also takes place independently of sexual orientation or sexual behavior, as well as with different legal and illegal substances. Terms such as “party and play” (PnP) or “high and horny” (HnH) are also often used synonymously with chemsex.
In connection with chemsex, dating apps such as Grindr, Planetromeo, Scruff, Barebuddy, Hornet, etc. also play an important role. By means of these apps, sexual contacts are quickly established and often also the exchange about existing substances is communicated. For many users, the focus is on the need for increased sexual disinhibition and intensity.
The substances consumed for this purpose (chemsex) do not only have this effect: chemsex involves a variety of different risks with possible consequences for physical and mental health.
