How PrEP Reimbursement Works!
HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is frequently used by chemsex users as a means of protection against HIV infection. Since April 2024, PrEP has also been available free of charge in Austria. The costs are reimbursed by the respective health insurance providers. Here are the most important details:
- Up to 60 euros per PrEP package are reimbursed. One package contains the necessary medication for one month. A list of specialized pharmacies can be found here: https://www.hivprep.at/prep-apotheken
- Costs can be submitted for reimbursement by presenting the pharmacy receipt along with the corresponding prescription to the respective health insurance provider. The submission can be done via the websites www.MeineSV.at, www.oegk.at, www.svs.at, and www.bvaeb.at. (For postal submissions, a copy of the eCard must be included.)
- Both single-month prescriptions and three-month prescriptions can be submitted for reimbursement.
- Please note that this offer does NOT apply to policyholders of the provincial healthcare funds (KfAs or KfGs).
Further information on PrEP can be found on the websites of the Ministry of Health (https://www.sozialministerium.at/Themen/Gesundheit/Uebertragbare-Krankheiten/Infektionskrankheiten-A-Z/HIV–AIDS/HIV-PrEP.html) and the Aids Hilfe Wien (https://aids.at/prep/).
